If you are installing ArcGIS on a computer that is on the UW network, follow the installation instructions that are provided on the ArcGIS installation media. Nearly all of your questions will be answered in those instructions!!

Before doing anything, please sign up for, UW-GIS-L, the listserv for distribution of UW-wide GIS announcements, including important information about software and the site license. UW GIS-L Information
Note: in order to do this type of installation, DO NOT INSTALL THE LICENSE MANAGER.
Install ArcGIS according to the instructions on the install media.
During the installation you may be asked to specify a license manager. Either skip this step and enter it after the installation is complete (as shown below) or enter the fully qualified domain name when prompted.
After you have installed the software, you will need to specify which license server to use.
Set a system environment variable called
ARCGIS_LICENSE_FILE
with the value (all on one line)
27004@sde.gis.washington.edu;27004@shake.ess.washington.edu;27004@duwamish.lib.washington.edu
Under Windows, you set an environment variable this way:
- Start > Settings > Control Panel > System > Advanced, click Environment Variables.
- If you do not have administrative privelege, click New for User variables, otherwise for System variables.
- Enter the Variable name
ARCGIS_LICENSE_FILE
and the Variable value
27004@sde.gis.washington.edu;27004@shake.ess.washington.edu;27004@duwamish.lib.washington.edu
Click OK.
- You will see that the variable now shows up in the list. Click OK twice.
- To verify that the varible is set, open a new Command Prompt (Start > Run, enter cmd), and issue the command
set ARCGIS_LICENSE_FILE
You will see that the environment variable is set. If this is not the case, try again or get help from your system administrator.
An alternate method that may speed client performance is to change the Windows Registry as Luke explains.
After you have installed ArcGIS, you should visit www.esri.com and follow links for Downloads > Patches and Service Packs > ArcInfo Desktop to get the latest software patches and updates.
Troubleshooting Network Connectivity
If you have attempted to start an ESRI product and get an error message like this:
this means you have not correctly specified a license server. Check:
You should check the page showing server status, alternately you can use the perl script is_tcp_port_listening.pl.
- Did you set the environment variable as described above?
Did you check that the varible is set?- Did you alter the registry as Luke explained?
You need to do one or the other or both!
Get help from your system administrator if you need it
If you get a response showing that the license servers are NOT listening on port 27004 (for Arc9) or 27005 (for Arc8), this means the servers are down. It is unlikely that all 3 servers will be down at the same time. If the servers are down, the administrators of these license servers will more than likely already know, and will be taking steps to correct this. If the servers are up but you get the same error message, you will need to have your network support personnel troubleshoot this. The ESRI technical contacts cannot give support for basic network connectivity issues.
If you have problems installing or running ArcGIS, search ESRI's Knowledge Base before asking for help. Most issues related to software installation and operation are documented by ESRI. If your problems persist, contact your system adminstrator before attempting to contact anyone at UW for support. If your system administrator has problems with the installation, have that person request support from either uw-gis-l or UW-ESRI technical contacts.
