Installing ArcGIS on a remote computer

Note: this option is only for those who need to run ArcGIS on a conmputer that will be physically separated from the UW IP network. This is intended to serve people who are at sea, in the field, or in other locations where they will not obtain a UW network internet address. The same license restrictions apply; the computer must be owned by a Washington State Institution of Public Higher Education, and the software must be used for UW work only.

If you do not absolutely need to be separated from the UW IP network, please do not use this option, as it requires effort on the part of unpaid volunteers at the UW. If you absolutely DO need this option, follow the instructions below:

  1. Before doing anything, please sign up for, UW-GIS-L, the listserv for distribution of UW-wide GIS announcements, including important information about software and the site license. UW GIS-L Information

  2. Get an ESRI Sentinel Key.

  3. Note the following information:

    1. computer name (do this by opening a Command Prompt and typing set computername)
    2. Sentinel Key number

  4. Request a license file. Do not proceed with installation until you have the license file.

  5. Install ArcGIS.
    1. Obtaining media.
    2. Use the installation instructions included with the ArcGIS installation media for installing a license manager and the ArcGIS application(s).
    3. If you are running a license server for multiple clients, to protect the security of your license server, use the options file (see the License Manager Reference Guide). Copy this license.opt ASCII file.

Under a typical Windows installation, this file is located at

      C:\Program Files\ESRI\License\arcgis9x\ARCGIS.opt

    4. If you are running a single use license for a remote laptop, do not use the license.opt file.
    5. If you will be running both version 8 and version 9 servers, see the license manager documentation.

  6. After you have installed ArcGIS, you should visit www.esri.com and follow links for Downloads > Patches and Service Packs > ArcInfo Desktop to get the latest software patches and updates.
