Getting an ESRI Software Sentinel Key
Running under Windows NT, 2000, or XP? If you are installing a license server on an NT machine, before you use the system, you will need to obtain a sentinel key ("dongle"). To run your own ESRI software server on a Windows machine, you will need an ESRI Sentinel Key. Sentinel keys cost $50.00 apiece or $90 for a bundle of 3. Include WA sales tax on your order. There are three ways of placing your order: by UW purchase order, credit card, or check.
Call ESRI to confirm the price and get a quote. Keep note of the quote number.
Contact your department's accounting office and have a Purchase Order drawn up. Make sure to have the Purchase Order Number on the paperwork, and that all necessary information is filled out, including signatures. Make the PO payable to
Include the reference to the quote number in your fax. Fax the signed PO to: Sandra Lee Evich

Call ESRI to confirm the price and get a quote. Keep note of the quote number.
Write a check and send it in to the following address:
Make the check out to "ESRI" and attach a copy of the quote to your check. Payment via check takes approximately 2 weeks to process.
Once you have the Sentinel Key in hand, revisit this page and start from here. These keys come in two styles, to be connected to the parallel port or the USB port. In any case, the sentinel key will have an 8-digit number printed on the key. This is the number you will use when you request a license. If you provide anything other than an 8-digit number, we will assume you are incapable of following instructions and may ignore your request! Here is an image of an old-style parallel sentinel key. The number on this key has been altered to "00000000." You will need to use the number printed on your key.
If you already have the sentinel key, or if you are installing a license server on a UNIX machine, then you will need to use this system to obtain a license file. Request a license file. When you fill out the forms, the system will record all of the information necessary for you to get a license file. Once the forms are filled out, mail will automatically be sent to the UW's ESRI contact, who will then generate a license for you. That license will arrive in your e-mail inbox. Once you have the license file, then you can go on to install ArcGIS.
