Assignment: Projections and Data Management

  1. Use the \esridata\world\cities.shp data set from the CD to find the cities of Longyearbyen, Norway, and Hobart, Australia.

In tabular format, report the distance (in both kilometers and miles) between these cities for each of the 3 projections. Round the distance to the nearest 100 mile and kilometer increment. Make all measurements in ArcView 3.x, rather than converting the units outside of ArcView 3.x. Make sure you report the projection you used, including all the projection parameters. (20)

[Hint: the world data sets in the esridata directory on the CD are all stored unprojected, in units of decimal degree of latitude and longitude.]

  2. Explain why the measurement you obtained from your own choice of a projection is different from the true value. (20)

[Hint: if you simply state that the measurements are different because the projections are different, you will get no credit for this question! Do not guess, but find out about the properties of the particular projection you have chosen.]

  3. Download the zipped shapefile culverts_utm10n_nad27_meters. Project it to match the other Pack Forest data. This culvert data set is stored in

    Projection UTM
    Zone 10
    Datum NAD27
    Units METERS

The Pack Forest data are projected according to the data description. [Note that State Plane, Washington South, NAD83 appears as NAD_1983_Washington_South [32149] in the Projection Utility.]

Paste into your answers a screen capture showing the projected culverts and the existing Pack Forest stream data theme. Make sure all culverts are visible in the screen capture.

  4. Download bad_pathnames.apr. Attempt to open the project. You will see a number of dialog windows asking for the location of each data set in the project. Note that the file locations the project is looking for are on drive W, e.g.:

    Cancel
a few of these, and then click the Cancel All button. Close the project without saving. This is what typically happens when you work on a project on one machine and then switch to another machine with different drive letters or pathnames.

Using the same method as in the lab exercise on project management, fix the project so the themes are found.

    Open the project again.

Make some changes to the project (any change that shows you have successfully opened the project and made a change), then paste in an image of the entire ArcView 3.x project application into your assignment answer.(20)

  5. Export View 2 from the project in 3 different image formats. Insert the graphics files into your assignment. Indicate the file format for each image. Which one reproduces the view with the best quality? (20)
