Assignment: Vector Analysis

  1. Report the area of these different regions of the world in square kilometers (to 3 decimal places). The regions, as shown below, should be stored and measured in the Mollweide projection (units: meters, central meridian: 0°). Use the data set in countries.zip (this data set is stored in decimal degrees of latitute and longitude ["unprojected"]). Report your measurements in tabular format (tabular format just means that your data should be graphically laid out in rows and columns rather than in a rambling sentence; you can use ArcView, Excel, Word, or whatever to do this). (20)

[Hint: there is a field in the theme table called Region representing the regions displayed on the image below.]

  2. Create an ArcView 3.x bar or column chart from the theme table for the theme you just generated. Include an image of the chart in your document. (15)

    The chart should show:
    - the square miles of each different region
    - axis labels
    - axis titles (including units)
    - Y-axis gridlines
    - a title

  3. For the Pack Forest CFI plot centers that have conifer basal area per acre greater than 100 ft^2 for 1989 (ba1989cpa), what is the mean distance (in meters) to the closest stream? Use CFI plot center points from the coverage from the CD \packgis\forest\cfi. (20)
[Hint: The map units of the Pack Forest data sets are in feet. Make sure to convert feet to meters!]

  4. For Pack Forest, what is the total length of Secondary use class roads within forest stands of site index greater than 100? Report length in feet. (20)

  5. Include a map (either a view or a layout) that distinctly shows these road segments. You can include other data on the view, but make sure the features are clearly visible or you will lose points. (10)

  6. Of the total area of Mixed-Douglas-fir stands at Pack Forest, what percentage overlaps with Scamman soils? (15)
