The ArcView interface is made up of a graphical user interface (GUI) several different types of windows. The GUI is composed of a Menu Bar, a Button Bar, a Tool Bar, and a Status Bar.
The main window, in which all ArcView activity will occur, is known as the Application Window. The application window contains the GUI and the other windows. Here is a snapshot of an ArcView application instance, with the different parts of the application window marked.
Within the application window are several other types of windows. Several different window types exist, as listed here:
Project Window: There is only one project window per application instance. The project window contains all the documents within the current project. Please take a moment now to reflect and commit this to memory. We will refer time and time again to the Project Window. You should become instinctively able to identify and activate the project window.
Document Windows: Each different type of information you use in a project will be contained within a different type of document window. The document types are
- Views, which contain coordinate geographic data;
- Tables, which contain tabular data;
- Layouts, which contain map layouts ready to be printed;
- Charts, which contain graphical views of tabular data;
- Scripts, which contain Avenue Scripts (programs); and
- 3D Scenes, which are used to display spatial data in 3 dimensions.
As we go through the term, we will use each of these document windows.
For more detailed views of the GUI, now read about the ArcView GUI.
