Using the Startup Project

READ AND UNDERSTAND THIS BEFORE YOU CONTINUE:

  1. All of the pre-build projects used in the course will be available on the web at the course web site. In order to use any of these projects, you must

    1. have the course CD loaded into the CD drive
    2. have your Zip disk loaded into the Zip drive, and know what drive letter it is assigned to.

  2. To open any of the pre-built projects, use the cfr250.apr. DO NOT open the project directly in ArcView

  3. When you create a project, use the cfr250.apr.

  4. If you have created a project with cfr250.apr, you will also need to open it bak up with cfr250.apr.

  5. Even when you build projects from scratch, you should use the cfr250.apr ArcView project file on the CD.

Failure to use the cfr250.apr project will cause problems.

Start ArcView
Open the Startup Project

Start ArcView

  1. The location of the ArcView shortcut may vary from system to system. It should be in a path similar to this:

  2. During the first lab session, you will be shown where the ArcView executable is on the computers in the lab.

  3. When ArcView opens, it will start with a single window (the Project Window, with the Untitled title bar) containing a few icons, a few menu choices, and a few buttons.

Open the Startup Project

  1. Make sure that the data CD is in the CD drive, and your Zip disk is in the Zip drive.

  2. From ArcView's File menu, select Open Project.

  3. Navigate to the CD (note to change drives, use the Drives: dropdown list at the lower right of the Open Project dialog), and select the cfr250.apr project file.

  4. If you do not have your Zip disk loaded, you will see an error message:

Insert your Zip disk and click Try Again.

  5. When the project opens, you will first be prompted to choose whether to Create a new project or to Open an existing project.

  6. If you decide to create a project from scratch, you will be prompted for where to save the new project file.

  7. After the project is saved, ArcView will run as you normally expect.

  8. If you decide to open an existing project, a dialog will open that will allow you to select a project to open.

  9. The project you have selected will open.
