Where is the GIS Lab?

The CFR GIS lab is located at Room 355 Bloedel Hall on South-Central Campus.

What facilities are available in the lab?

The lab consists of a collection of hardware and software used for GIS projects, analysis, and research.

Hardware

  • Sun Computers
    • Sparc Ultra 1 170 E (highlead.cfr.washington.edu)
    • Sparc Ultra 1 140 E (lobo.cfr.washington.edu)
  • PCs
    • Several Pentium-class PCs
  • Print Devices
    • HP 650C Color Inkjet Postscript/HPGL Plotter (Roll feed, 36" wide)
    • Other printing devices are available in the CFR Advanced Software Support Lab (311 Bloedel).
  • Input Devices
    • CalComp 9100 54"x48" Digitizing Board
    • Backlit Stereoscope

Software

How do I gain access to the lab?

The lab is open for use by any student, staff, or faculty of CFR. The lab is protected by pushbutton door locks. To establish an account and to get the current keycode, fill out the keycode request form and contact the lab manager, Phil Hurvitz (phurvitz@u.washington.edu, 685-8179). Phil will also give you an account on the UNIX network within the lab.

  • Policies are currently being developed for budgeting use of the lab facilities. There are several options in discussion:
    • At the least, users should contribute funds for supplies, equipment, and upkeep of the facility.
    • Users may furnish their own hardware for use in the lab. Although the contributor of equipment will have priority use, the equipment will also be available on a time-permitting basis for other lab users
    • Users may donate equipment to CFR for use within the lab.
    • Any and all ideas for obtaining hardware will be graciously accepted.

Who runs the lab?

Phil Hurvitz, a 1994 graduate of CFR, is in charge of the lab's space and access, including management of the hardware and software. Phil is also available in the lab to answer questions about the use of the facility's hardware, software, and to give guidance on technical issues in applying GIS to your research.

The lab is also staffed by Luke Rogers, specialist in GIS client/server and database applications. Luke is currently working on special projects for the Rural Technology Initiative (RTI)
